New to the market in the past few years is the IP (Internet Protocol) intercom. 

The IP intercom uses the IP protocol to transmit the voice / picture of the visitor to a device in the house, which may be an embedded pc intercom unit, a desktop pc, or laptop, or even to the homeowners laptop in another country.

While still fairly expensive there are many applications especially in MDU (Multi Dwelling Units - Apartment Blocks) that make it a sensible choice. 

With todays automation systems more heavily interoperable with IP devices - it is simple to display the picture from the gate camera on the automation systems wall mounted touchscreens - one press of a button admits the pizza guy.
