The Biometric scanner or Fringerprint or Thumb Scanner learns a users thumb or fingerprint and allows access based on a match. 

There are two main types, static hand print and swipe finger print.  The static hand print reads more points of data so is faster and more secure, whereas the swipe finger readers are less expensive and more aesthetically appealing for a domestic application.
